![]() Wednesday, June 19, 2002 -- So I don't have new pics up... I always put off writing new entries because I don't have new pics ready to post. Well, I'm going to stop that now. It's terribly silly.
Dagny is almost 5 months old!!! I can't believe it. She has gotten so big and changed so much. We figure she's at least 16 pounds and about 26 inches long. That's pretty big. In fact, Dagny, her 10 month old cousin, Jake, and her 2 year old cousin, Kenny, all wear the same size diaper! Now, Kenny is a little on the small side, but Jake is no shrimp. But even more surprising.... she's got TWO teeth!!!! They're the two front bottom ones. They showed up at the 4 month mark. Teething is not fun. It turns my very good, happy, never crying baby into a very unhappy, screaming like the world is ending baby. Luckily, some baby tylenol and some baby orajel and a good dose a walking/rocking usually calms her down to sleep in about 30 minutes. Poor thing. "And how's nursing, now?", you ask. Going fairly well. She's bitten me a few times. It didn't hurt nearly as bad as I expected it to. It startled me more than anything. I just try to react somewhat strongly, then I say, "No! That hurts Mama", and then I stop the feeding. She seems to have gotten the message. I'll see what happens when the top teeth come in, though. The bottoms ones are covered by her tongue while she's nursing. She's a very good sleeper and I love having her in bed with me. We were visiting my mom in New York 2 weeks ago and I guess my mom was expecting to be woken up in the middle of the night by a crying baby. She was very concerned that first morning that she hadn't been. Dagny does nurse during the night, sometimes once, sometimes 3 times, usually twice, but she doesn't wake up. I just magically wake up (not groggy at all), look over, see her sucking her thumb and starting to stir. I grab her, nurse her (which I can now do in the dark, but still can't do lying down), then I put her back down once she pops herself off, and she's still fast asleep. Takes about 10 minutes. Then I just go back to sleep. She usually goes to sleep between 8:30 and 9pm, and then she'll nurse at around 1:30am and 5:30am and then she's up between 7 and 7:30am. During the day the pattern is up for 2-3 hours, down for 1-2 hours. Occasionally she'll take a 3 hour late-afternoon nap. Developmentally, she's doing some fun stuff. She started "talking" again. At first it was a very throaty "aahhhhhhhh." Or a closed mouth "Mmmmmmmmmm." Now the sounds are more pleasant. It's really funny. She's very into her toys now. She grabs them, passes them from one hand to the other, holds them at arms length so she can get a good look at them, and then they go right into her mouth for a good chomping. She'll also reach for and swipe at her mobile or the toys hanging on her activity gym. She also grabs at just about everything that comes into her reach. Including my glasses, Pete's glasses, Pete's beard, my hair, my shirt, etc... She loves to expose me while nursing. She also kind of holds my breast, which is really cute. She's also very alert and interactive. She has lots of smiles for everyone. She's even giggled a few times. She has the greatest facial expressions, they just crack me up. She can sit hunched over by herself for a minute or two. She can sit propped up for a good 10-15 minutes. She can almost roll over, but not quite. And she does pretty good with tummy time. She's getting to be really fun and she seems to have a very sweet, happy personality. She'll play by herself for about 10-15 minutes at a time, which I think is pretty good for her age. I just need to get better at getting things done while holding her. The sling works great, I just have short arms, so it's like when I was 9 months pregnant, only worse since she's much bigger now. I can't work around her when she's in it. But it's great for being out and about and for shopping. I guess that's it for now.
